I've been thinking a lot about where one starts when decorating a home. Some people find one amazing piece and decorate around that. Some people choose a color palette and go from there. Another group of people begin by identifying a style (bohemian, classic, modern, vintage, etc.) and choose pieces accordingly. Then there is Joy Thigpen. Wedding extraordinaire and editor of Once Wed (my favorite place for wedspiration when I was planning my own wedding), she planned and decorated her home around a song: Mushaboom by Feist.
She wanted her home to be a lighthearted and playful place for her two young children (how awesome would it be to grow up in that rainbow room??!):
So, here's a question to get you thinking: If you were to choose a song to inspire your home, what would it be? I keep bouncing around between something very soothing and calm and something very positive and up beat.
I'm kind of obsessed with this bohemion-chic apartment featured in this month's Lonny. The apartment is owned by two sisters, who really know how to mix new and old. The striped rug! The tree! The wallpaper! Hearts! I love it all.
There is something so whimsical and fun about an indoor swing. This will be added to my rich list (which includes a library - I grew up watching Beauty and the Beast, okay???). Here's hoping for strong ceilings and room to fly in my future home.
P.S. Doesn't that last one look like a giant necklace?
Loving what I'm seeing at the small Philadelphia-based furniture company BDDW. They are known for their wood pieces, but its the sofas that caught my eye.
Jaime and Anthony's home was featured quite a while ago on The Selby, but I keep coming back to it. I love how cluttered and collected it all looks.. and even that it looks a bit creepy. I can't help but think it would make an amazing haunted house with all that taxidermy.
I love this amazing walk-in closet over at House of Fifty! Interior designer Saudah Saleem convinced her husband to change their master bedroom to the smaller guest room so she could use the master bedroom as her closet, promising he would finally be able to see the floor in the new bedroom. Mustard yellow settee, chevron rug, plus shoes on display? Yes, please! Also, can you believe the wardrobe/shelving is all from Ikea?
I came across this "Adams family meets Alice in Wonderland" victorian home in Sydney, and fell in love with its dark and mysterious atmosphere. The home had been abandoned for 40 years, before Australian designer Debra Conin took on the challenge. She transformed it to her current home and office in only four months. Pretty amazing.
It appears I am obsessed with maps. These guys make up about half of my Etsy cart, and for good reason. This is a trend I can get behind! From the vault:
